The Karasik Scholarship will allow me to attend the Uriel Weinrich Yiddish Summer Program in New York City from June 24th to August 2nd. Attending the program is vital to the development of my Yiddish language skills, which are crucial to the research and writing I will do in my doctoral dissertation. Last year, with the help of the Karasik Scholarship for Study Abroad from the Program in Jewish Culture and Society and the Graduate College’s Master’s Travel Grant, I was able to attend the Centrum Kultury Jidisz’s 16th International Summer Seminar in Yiddish Language and Culture in Warsaw, Poland, completing the third level of Yiddish language study in the program. The research and language learning I undertook allowed me to develop my research on the Yiddish writer Avrom Sutzkever in my paper entitled “Mourner’s Kaddish: The Post-Holocaust Poland of Julian Tuwim and Avrom Sutzkever” which I recently presented at the Association for Jewish Studies’ Annual Conference in Boston. This year, I intend to complete the fourth level of Yiddish language study to prepare for my upcoming Yiddish Literature examination.
