From Candace:
I am a senior pursuing a Bachelor’s in economics and a minor in Jewish studies. I have taken courses have recently finished courses on the history of anti-Semitism and Soviet Jewish history. I am currently enrolled in classes about the Holocaust and medieval Jewish thought. I am currently associated with the Illini Strings and the Illini Women in Economics. I grew up in the southwest suburbs of Chicago, and my only experience with the Jewish community was through media and museums. My parents wanted our family to understand and learn about different cultures and world views. By having the opportunity to take these classes and learn from professors who are so passionate about their classes, I have been able to become a more critical person and see the world through a different lens.
I have had the opportunity to work with passionate professors who are eager to work with students to provide the best education and share what the university has to offer. By attending out of class films and events at the Krannert Center and Foreign Language Building, my understanding of Jewish culture has expanded rapidly. As I approach graduation this December, I come to a close with my enrollment at the university, but my learning of Jewish culture has only just begun.
