Research Description
My first book examined representations of "America" in French texts, including novels, plays, poetry, travel narratives, philosophical essays and cultural criticism. My second book looked at transatlantic national and republican traditions and conflicting notions such as multiculturalism, universalism, and communitarianism in France and the United States. I have recently published a study of recent debates in French culture from the vantage point of the idea of melancholia, with a focus on loss, mourning, and memory.
I am currently working on the descriptions and afterlives of 9/11 in France.
