Documenting Disaster: The Lessons of the Ringelblum Archive

Samuel Kassow is the Charles H. Northam Professor of History at Trinity College in Hartford, CT. One of the leading scholars of the Holocaust and Eastern European Jewry, he is most renowned for his magisterial work on the Warsaw Ghetto, Who Will Write Our History? Rediscovering a Hidden Archive of the Warsaw Ghetto (2007/2009). In addition, he has published the books Students, Professors, and the State in Tsarist Russia: 1884-1917 (1989), Between Tsar and People: the Search for a Public Identity in Tsarist Russia (1991), and The Distinctive Life of East European Jewry (2004).

Professor Kassow’s lecture is the keynote address of the conference Annihilation, Archive, Autobiography: Networks of Testimony in German-Occupied Europe, which will continue on Friday, March 11 (2011).
