Isaac Babel and the Russian Oedipus

Gregory Freidin is currently Professor and Chairman of the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures at Stanford University, where he has taught since 1977. A native of Russia, Professor Freidin has written widely on twentieth-century Russian literature and the arts and their intersection with politics and society. He is the author of a critical biography of the Russian poet Osip Mandelstam, A Coat of Many Colors (University of California Press, 1987), as well as the editor of and contributor to several books on Russian culture and politics. His articles have appeared in scholarly journals and large circulation periodicals both in the United States and Russia. He is now completing a book on Isaac Babel entitled A Jew on HOrseback: Isaac Babel in Russia and America  (Stanford University Press) and embarking on a collaborative project on political symbolism and rituals in post-communist Russia.
